GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Propylene Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook, 2021-2030 – Asia and Middle East Lead Global Propylene Capacity Additions’ states that the global propylene capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the upcoming years, potentially increasing from 133.18 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in 2020 to 199.35mtpa in 2030. Around 123 planned and announced plants are slated to come online by 2030, primarily in Asia and North America.

In Asia, the majority of capacity additions are in China, with planned and announced capacity additions of about 29.53mtpa by 2030. Capital expenditure (capex) for these plants totals $22.43bn by 2030. Shandong Yulong Petrochemical is the top company accounting for the major capacity additions in China.

In the Middle East majority of the capacity additions are in Saudi Arabia, with a total capacity of about 2.19mtpa by 2030. The country is expected to spend a capex of $2.08bn. Major capacity additions will be from Advanced Petrochemical.

In Africa, Egypt leads with planned and announced capacity additions of about 2.18mtpa by 2030. The country is expected to spend a total of $1.57bn by 2030. Tahrir Petrochemicals is the top company accounting for the major capacity additions in Egypt.

In North America, the majority of propylene capacity additions are in the US, with planned and announced capacity additions of about 1.95mtpa by 2030. Capex for these plants totals $1.31bn in the upcoming years.

In Europe, Belgium has the highest planned and announced propylene plants with a total capacity of 1.50mtpa by 2030. The capex for these plants is $1.40bn by 2030.
