Russian energy company Gazprom is evaluating possible participation in projects in Iran, according to the company’s deputy chief executive officer Vitaly Markelov.

“Our work on entering the projects in Iran has not been completed yet, which is why it is too early to speak [about] where gas from Iran will run,” he said to Russia’s Tass news agency.

Markelov said that a joint coordination committee made up of Gazprom employees and Iranian partners would evaluate potential projects.

He also said that Gazprom has ruled out participating in the planned scheme to build a gas pipeline from Iran to Oman.

Iran and Oman reached an agreement to construct a gas pipeline in 2015.

Gazprom reported on 14 December 2017 that it had signed a roadmap for implementation of projects in Iran and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) and cooperation on a liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Iran.

At the beginning of November 2018, Gazprom and National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) signed several MoUs in the gas sector.

The documents stated that Gazprom would play a role in the development of Iranian gas fields and gas transportation systems.
