Offshore Technology Excellence Rankings 2022 – The Verdict

Shell is a multinational oil and gas company that is ranked for Business Expansion and Environmental in the 2022 Offshore Technology Excellence Rankings.

Shell has been developing environmentally friendly fossil fuel alternatives, such as hydrogen and biofuels, having made a final investment decision to build one of Europe’s biggest biofuels facilities in Rotterdam, the Netherlands and also collaborated to produce low-carbon hydrogen in Canada. It also agreed to jointly pursue investments in UK hydrogen projects.

The company has also been heavily involved in carbon capture projects, including building a carbon capture storage facility in Canada, establishing the Northern Lights CCS project to explore direct air capture; and entering into a collaboration with Malaysia’s state-run oil firm to explore carbon capture and storage (CCS) options in the region. It also partnered with another company to advance decarbonisation solutions, jointly developing processes that would make use of carbon dioxide emitted from industrial processes to produce fuels and chemicals.

Elsewhere the company made a notable oil discovery at the Leopard prospect in the deepwater US Gulf of Mexico (GOM). The Leopard prospect is located in Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) block Alaminos Canyon (AC) 691, approximately 32km east of the Whale discovery, and 53km from the Perdido host. 

Elsewhere the company also won production sharing contracts (PSC) for two pre-salt oil fields offshore Brazil. The company along with its partners have also signed a concession agreement to develop and produce natural gas from the Block 10 of the Saih Rawl gas field in Oman.
