Since 1968, Cortem S.p.A. has been providing explosion-proof and weather-proof electrical equipment solutions for applications in hazardous areas.
The company is a leader in the industry because of its pioneering role in technical innovation and advancement. Cortem offers a wide range of products for onshore and offshore applications.
Ex-field customised protection solutions
The peculiarity of the Technology Group Cortem, formed by Cortem, Elfit and Fondisonzo, is the experience gained in the Ex-field, which results not only in the furniture of simple Ex-products, but also in engineered and customised solutions. Our products are internally designed and manufactured according to different methods of protection such as ‘Ex db’ flameproof, ‘Ex eb’ increased safety, ‘Ex de’ mixed and ‘Ex nR’ restricted breathing, with the use of primary aluminium alloys, stainless steels and plastic materials that assure resistance and duration.
LIFEX-M series LED linear lighting fixtures in aluminium feature an innovative bracket system, with variable fixing distance, allows for simple installation, easy retrofit and the possibility of rotating the lighting fixture at -30°/0°/+30°.
FLOWEX series high bay explosion-proof LED lighting fixtures combine the constant lighting power of 151 l/W real with extreme lightness, ease of installation and versatility for any type of certified environment.
Explosion-proof EJB series junction boxes for group IIB+H2. Body and lid in low copper content aluminium alloy, stainless steel cover bolts, RAL 7035 polyester coating, galvanized steel mounting brackets. Silicon gasket.
EJBX series junction boxes are made from welded 316L stainless steel sheet and come complete with stainless steel screws and a silicone gasket running around the perimeter to provide the IP66 protection degree.
Ex FASTEX-M series electrical connectors allow to connect an equipment to the electric circuit or to others equipment safely and quickly. Available in three and five-pole versions.
NAV, NEV series explosion-protected cable glands are suitable for use in hazardous areas with danger of explosion to enable direct insertion of armoured and non-armoured cables ex equipment.
PYN, SPYN series explosion-protected plugs and sockets available with a wide range of amperage (from 16A to 125A) and voltage and they are equipped with a disconnect or magnetothermal switch.
GRD… series electronic earthing equipment ensures tankers are earthed when loading and unloading flammable liquids in environments where there is an explosion hazard. ‘Ex d/tb’ and ‘Ex eb/tb’ methods of protection.
Electrical panels for lighting, distribution, signalling, motive power, motor control valves systems and panel boards manufactured according to customer’s specification.
A, I and CMD series control stations are ideal to house on the cover electrical equipment as control and signalling devices. Wide range of models and accessories available. Different materials.
The aluminium alloy used by Cortem has successfully passed all tests required by the EN 60068-2-30 Standard (hot/humid cycles) and the EN 60068-2-11 Standard (salt spray test). All our aluminium alloy products are protected by a polyester coating RAL 7035. This treatment, only provided by Cortem Group, guarantees durable protection.

90% of our production is in the oil and gas sector both offshore and onshore, but also in chemical, pharmaceutical plants and in all those manufacturing areas where the presence of explosive atmospheres may occur such as grain silos, woodworks and paper mills. We invest every year some of our resources to develop innovative products that meet the market needs, and, for this reason, our R&D department studies the best solution valuating normative and market price issues, plant and security aspects.
About Cortem Group
With four sister companies, ten distribution hubs and a wide sales network, Cortem provides a local and qualified presence around the world. The pay-off ‘to be sure to be safe’ is our motto for everything we design and manufacture.
The recognised quality of our products and of our automated control manufacturing systems is one of the principles guiding Cortem Group activities to ensure people safety on plants and environment protection. There’s an internal control system for the entire productive cycle. The Quality System aligns with the requirements of UNI EN ISO 9001:2015. Plant facilities and production procedures also operate according to the international standard UNI EN ISO 14001:2015 for the Environmental Management System. In addition, Cortem Group has developed an Occupational Safety and Health Management System certified according to the ISO 45001 Standard.
The explosion-proof electrical equipment manufactured by Cortem Group is certified in accordance with the European standard ATEX and the International regulation IEC Ex, and has also obtained the Brazilian INMETRO, the English UKEX, the Emirati ECASEx, the Indian CCoE, the Chinese CCC, the Russian TR CU certification, and other national legislations. Cortem respects these strict international construction rules and guarantees the safety of people and environment.
An increasingly frequent case for the construction of Zone 1 switchboards is the use of Ex eb enclosures for the integration of electromechanical components and/or electronic interfaces compliant with EPL Gb certification.
An aspect that has been repeatedly addressed in explosion-proof constructions connected via pipe systems is the need to equip the enclosures with cable outlets with conduit sealing fittings.
In systems built in potentially explosive atmospheres, large spaces are classified as Zone 2, i.e., an area in which the formation of an explosive atmosphere during normal operations is not likely, and if it does occur, it is of short duration.
To save energy in lighting systems located in areas at risk of potentially explosive atmospheres, it is possible to decide to intervene by automatically switching off the devices after a certain number of hours or, where possible, by reducing the luminous flux [1] at the outlet thanks to floodlights, linear lighting fixtures and high bays with several types of dimming.
