Since 1968, Cortem S.p.A. has been providing explosion-proof and weather-proof electrical equipment solutions for applications in hazardous areas.

The peculiarity of the Technology Group Cortem, formed by Cortem, Elfit and Fondisonzo, is the experience gained in the Ex-field, which results not only in the furniture of simple Ex-products, but also in engineered and customised solutions. Our products are internally designed and manufactured according to different methods of protection such as ‘Ex db’ flameproof, ‘Ex eb’ increased safety, ‘Ex de’ mixed and ‘Ex nR’ restricted breathing, with the use of primary aluminium alloys, stainless steels and plastic materials that assure resistance and duration.
The aluminium alloy used by Cortem has successfully passed all tests required by the EN 60068-2-30 Standard (hot/humid cycles) and the EN 60068-2-11 Standard (salt spray test). All our aluminium alloy products are protected by a polyester coating RAL 7035. This treatment, only provided by Cortem Group, guarantees durable protection.

We invest every year some of our resources to develop innovative products that meet the market needs, and, for this reason, our R&D department studies the best solution valuating normative and market price issues, plant and security aspects.

The recognised quality of our products and of our automated control manufacturing systems is one of the principles guiding Cortem Group activities to ensure people safety on plants and environment protection. Plant facilities and production procedures also operate according to the international standard UNI EN ISO 14001:2015 for the Environmental Management System. In addition, Cortem Group has developed an Occupational Safety and Health Management System certified according to the ISO 45001 Standard.
The explosion-proof electrical equipment manufactured by Cortem Group is certified in accordance with the European standard ATEX and the International regulation IEC Ex, and has also obtained the Brazilian INMETRO, the English UKEX, the Emirati ECASEx, the Indian CCoE, the Chinese CCC, the Russian TR CU certification, and other national legislations. Cortem respects these strict international construction rules and guarantees the safety of people and environment.
An increasingly frequent case for the construction of Zone 1 switchboards is the use of Ex eb enclosures for the integration of electromechanical components and/or electronic interfaces compliant with EPL Gb certification.
Today, we use many different materials for producing equipment and components designed for areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere.
An aspect that has been repeatedly addressed in explosion-proof constructions connected via pipe systems is the need to equip the enclosures with cable outlets with conduit sealing fittings.
In systems built in potentially explosive atmospheres, large spaces are classified as Zone 2, i.e., an area in which the formation of an explosive atmosphere during normal operations is not likely, and if it does occur, it is of short duration.
To save energy in lighting systems located in areas at risk of potentially explosive atmospheres, it is possible to decide to intervene by automatically switching off the devices after a certain number of hours or, where possible, by reducing the luminous flux [1] at the outlet thanks to floodlights, linear lighting fixtures and high bays with several types of dimming.
