The most reliable solution for chemical and HP/HT services, SPIR STAR is the only company that manufactures hoses made of PVDF, a material that is setting the standard for chemical and temperature resistance.
Originally designed as a permeation barrier for alcohol-based fuels, PVDF has a low water absorption rate, a high molecular density and heat resistance, all of which are excellent properties to be used as a methanol and chemical transfer hose. Our PVDF hose series (PPA and HT) have been successfully in service in the Gulf of Mexico and North Sea for the past ten to 12 years.
The high temperature (HT) series, with an inner core and outer cover made of PVDF, is rated up to 150°C with working pressures up to 15,000psi. The PPA series, with a PVDF inner core and seawater resistant nylon outer cover, is rated to 15,000psi and 80°C and is suited to methanol and chemical injection service.
In addition, both series are capable of working with the harshest of chemicals, provide low permeation rates, and can withstand external pressure up to depths of 12,500ft.
SPIR STAR hoses have a proven record in deep-water applications for hydraulic well control and chemical injection. In working with the various control groups, there have been several variations in which our hoses have been deployed. These include jacketed umbilicals to wire tied bundles.
There is a distinct advantage in using hoses over steel tube umbilicals. Due to the high external collapse resistance, the hoses can be easily deployed and laid on the seaboard floor, where steel tube umbilicals are difficult to deploy and costly to manufacture.
Why use PVDF?
It offers:
- Very low permeation combined with high chemical resistance (more than ten times less that Nylon 11 – tested at 15,000psi, 70°C and 90°C)
- Dimensional stability at high temperatures
- Intrinsic high purity (no biofilm formation)
- No contamination and low surface tension (no sticking)
Why use a PVDF hose instead of steel tube?
PVDF hoses are:
- Easier to install
- Very flexible
- Time and labour costs are drastically reduced
- No elbow and unions are needed as the hose is flexible
- No leakage
- Production lengths up to 4,500m continuous
- Up to 40% cost savings

SPIR STAR is a specialist in the design and manufacture of high-pressure hoses for offshore applications. We have worked hand-in-hand with the umbilical manufacturers in providing completed hose bundles to the field.
Additionally, we have worked as a consultant to various engineering companies in setting the design criteria for deepwater hose use in both hydraulic control and chemical injection umbilicals.
SPIR STAR can work directly with your engineers in overseeing the design and lay-up of your workover and subsea umbilicals. This will ensure your umbilical is designed with a tried and proven hose that will work in the harshest of environments.
