The United Metallurgical Company (AO OMK) continues with its large-scale investment program to revamp and upgrade its facilities in the oil and gas line pipe business unit.

The program includes upgrades for all OMK facilities that currently manufacture electrically welded OCTG tubulars, developing a more extensive product offering and improving the quality of oil and gas production pipes. Under this program, Vyksa Steel Works will launch a new product: oil production tubing of ODs ranging from 60mm to 114mm and wall gages of between 3mm and 12.7mm from the in-house hot-rolled coil.

Vyksa Steel Works has already built ERW Shop 1 to manufacture longitudinally electrically welded tubing. The design capacity of ERW Shop 1 will be 165,000 tons of tubing a year. The finishing centre, which is already up and running, will thread the casing of ODs between 245mm and 426mm.

Hot-rolled steel for the tubing facility will be supplied by the VSW Integrated Casting and Rolling facility. An integrated production sequence will help control quality at all manufacturing steps, whilst a fully vertically integrated process from sheet metal to shipping at the same site will help reduce order execution times significantly.

The production areas of ERW Shop 1 manufacturing tubing will include the following lines:

  • Welding area (60-178 pipe mill) to make pipe of ODs between 60.3mm and 177.8mm
  • Whole-body heat treat
  • Finishing area
  • Finished product area

The new facilities will help produce OD tubing between 60mm and 114mm and wall gages of up to 12.7mm, which are designed to produce oil and gas from wells, to re-inject water and compressed air (gas) and perform other activities related to well maintenance and workover.  ERW Shop 1 will be equipped with a state-of-the-art mill capable of producing tubings of grades J55, K72, and N80 Type 1 without additional heat treatment. An in-house whole-body pipe heat treatment line (quench+temper) will produce pipes of higher grades (N80Q-P110).

All pipes will be manufactured to GOST 31446-2017, GOST R53366-2009, or API 5CT specifications with PSL-1 using standard in-house couplings. These couplings have triangular or trapezoidal thread forms (NU, NKTM, NKM). Pipe manufactured to API 5CT PSL-2 specifications will be available upon customer request.

Each joint will be marked with paint or a die stamp as per the specifications currently in effect. Pipes will be bundled into hex or square bundles for safe product transportation to the customer.

Once the Oil and Gas Line Pipe Business Unit expansion program at Vyksa Steel Works is complete, OMK will be able to offer oil and gas leaders casing, tubing and line pipes with improved properties which meet their most stringent quality requirements.

AO OMK marketing director Alexander N Sakhnevich said: “The launch of a tubing facility will bring the company into a new previously unserviced segment of the oil and gas industry and will help meet the energy companies’ demands for threaded OCTG tubulars in the best possible way.”
