The global oil & gas industry noticed a 3.4% drop in IT hiring activity in August 2021 over the previous month, led by Exxon Mobil’s 16.44% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The oil & gas industry’s overall hiring activity declined 2.09% when compared with July 2021.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 5.78% share of the global oil & gas industry’s hiring activity in August 2021, down 0.13% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of August 2021 were 1.01% lower when compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 1.75% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive oil & gas IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 54.75% emerged as the top IT occupation in the oil & gas hiring activity in August 2021, a 6.54% decline over the previous month. Miscellaneous Computer Occupations came in second with a share of 14.71% in August 2021, down 3.28% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Database and Network Administrators and Architects with a 10.33% share in August 2021, a decline of 5.1% over the previous month, and Computer and Information Analysts with an 8.94% share in August 2021 and a drop of 0.62% over July 2021.

Top five oil & gas companies by recruitment activity in August 2021

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average growth of 5.56% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global oil & gas industry during August 2021 over July 2021.

Exxon Mobil posted 296 IT jobs in August 2021 and registered a drop of 4.52% over the previous month, followed by Reliance Industries with 145 jobs and a 28.32% growth. Baker Hughes Holdings with 113 IT jobs and Yara International with 77 jobs, recorded an 8.65% growth and a 24.19% rise, respectively, while Royal Dutch Shell recorded a 6.49% drop with 72 job postings during August 2021.

Regional composition of IT hiring in oil & gas industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global oil & gas IT hiring activity in August 2021 with a 37.31% share, which marked a 1.97% rise over the previous month.

Asia-Pacific stood next with 34.87%, registering an 8.59% month-on-month decline. Europe was the third leading region with an 18.21% share and a 19.8% drop over July 2021.

In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 8.33% and a month-on-month drop of 3.85%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 1.28%, registering a 45.24% decrease over the previous month.
