Newpark Resources has been granted a patent for mats and panels made from different materials with varying compositions and properties. The panels are formed by depositing different materials into a mold and applying pressure or heat to create a bonded panel. The patent specifically mentions the use of high density polyethylene (HDPE) as one of the materials. A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11712869B2) describes a new type of mat panel and mat structure. The panel is made up of two portions, with the first portion composed of at least 75% high density polyethylene (HDPE) and the second portion made of HDPE with a weight percentage equal to or less than that of the first portion. The two materials are melted and bonded together, and they can have different compositions and material properties.

The first portion of the panel can have different properties from the second portion, such as density, flexibility, stiffness, rigidity, antiskid, antistatic, conductivity, resilience, chemical resistance, and permeability. The first portion can be a top layer of the panel, while the second portion can be a bottom layer. Alternatively, both portions can extend from the bottom to the top surface of the panel, with the first portion forming the main body and the second portion forming a lip structure.

The panel can also include a third portion positioned between the first and second portions, which is formed by the same material as the first portion. The first portion can have interior structures consisting of voids and ribs. The first and second materials are directly bonded and fused together to form a single, unitary body.

The composition of the first material can include HDPE, calcium carbonate concentrate, and color concentrate, while the second material can include HDPE, linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), calcium carbonate concentrate, and color concentrate. The third portion can be made of very low-density polyethylene (VLDPE), HDPE, an anti-static agent, and color concentrate. Alternatively, the third portion can be made of metallocene linear low-density polyethylene (mLLDPE), HDPE, an anti-static concentrate, and color concentrate.

The patent also describes a mat structure consisting of two panels bonded together. The first panel has a first portion and a second portion, while the second panel also has a first portion and a second portion. The second panel can be made from a single material. The first and second panels are bonded together using a joint made of the same material as the first portion of both panels, and a perimeter weld can further secure the panels.

Overall, this patent introduces a novel mat panel and mat structure that allows for the combination of different materials and properties, providing versatility and customization options for various applications.
