The global oil & gas industry noticed a 5.9% drop in IT hiring activity in July 2022 over the previous month, led by Shell’s 9.46% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The oil & gas industry’s overall hiring activity declined 0.75% when compared with June 2022.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 5.74% share of the global oil & gas industry’s hiring activity in July 2022, down 0.44% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of July 2022 were 7.32% lower when compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 14.01% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive oil & gas IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 37.42% emerged as the top IT occupation in the oil & gas hiring activity in July 2022, an 8.62% decline over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 21.58% in July 2022, flat growth over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Computer and Information Analysts with an 18.24% share in July 2022, a decline of 5.4% over the previous month, and Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 12.26% share in July 2022 and a drop of 21.45% over June 2022.

Top five oil & gas companies by recruitment activity in July 2022

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 3.14% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global oil & gas industry during July 2022 over June 2022.

Shell posted 209 IT jobs in July 2022 and registered a rise of 16.76% over the previous month, followed by Ecopetrol with 202 jobs and a 16.18% decline. Koch Industries with 199 IT jobs and Baker Hughes with 81 jobs, recorded a 23.17% decline and a 35% rise, respectively, while PI Industries recorded a 41.07% rise with 79 job postings during July 2022.

Regional composition of IT hiring in oil & gas industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global oil & gas IT hiring activity in July 2022 with a 40.36% share, which marked a 9.9% drop over the previous month.

Asia-Pacific stood next with 29.5%, registering a 2.19% month-on-month growth. Europe was the third leading region with a 17.56% share and a 7.4% drop over June 2022.

In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 10.81% and a month-on-month drop of 21.64%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 1.76%, registering a flat growth over the previous month.
