The global oil & gas industry noticed a 7.2% drop in IT hiring activity in June 2022 over the previous month, led by Koch Industries 12.16% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The oil & gas industry’s overall hiring activity declined 3.08% when compared with May 2022.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 6.03% share of the global oil & gas industry’s hiring activity in June 2022, down 0.07% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of June 2022 were 11.54% lower when compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 21.2% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive oil & gas IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 37.89% emerged as the top IT occupation in the oil & gas hiring activity in June 2022, a 23.57% decline over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 20.17% in June 2022, down 10.46% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Computer and Information Analysts with a 17.53% share in June 2022, a decline of 20.85% over the previous month, and Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 14.42% share in June 2022 and a drop of 4.67% over May 2022.

Top five oil & gas companies by recruitment activity in June 2022

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 26.85% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global oil & gas industry during June 2022 over May 2022.

Koch Industries posted 258 IT jobs in June 2022 and registered a drop of 11.03% over the previous month, followed by Ecopetrol with 227 jobs and a 25.57% decline. Shell with 138 IT jobs and Sasol with 99 jobs, recorded a 50.18% decline and a 26.12% drop, respectively, while Exxon Mobil recorded a 14.78% drop with 98 job postings during June 2022.

Regional composition of IT hiring in oil & gas industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global oil & gas IT hiring activity in June 2022 with a 41.85% share, which marked a 15.51% drop over the previous month.

Asia-Pacific stood next with 25.68%, registering a 24.62% month-on-month decline. Europe was the third leading region with a 17.2% share and a 4.45% drop over May 2022.

In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 13.52% and a month-on-month drop of 28.78%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 1.74%, registering a flat growth over the previous month.
