North America witnessed a 5.4% drop in IT hiring activity in the oil & gas industry in December 2021 when compared with the previous month, according to GlobalData’s Job Analytics dashboard.

December 2021 has seen a decrease of 1.85% in the overall hiring activity when compared with November 2021.

IT jobs accounted for a 4.46% share in the industry’s total hiring activity in December 2021, registering an increase of 0.01% over the last three-month average share.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers Occupations leads by classification in December 2021

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers Occupations emerged as the leading IT occupation in North America with a share of 52.96% in December 2021, an 11.86% drop over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in next, claiming a share of 14.92% in December 2021, marking an 11.9% month-on-month decline. In the third place was Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a share of 14.52% in December 2021, a 26.53% drop from November 2021.

Computer and Information Analysts registered a share of 9.68% in December 2021, a 26.53% decline over the previous month.

Top five oil & gas companies in North America’s IT recruitment activity in December 2021

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 9.36% in the overall IT recruitment activity of North America’s oil & gas industry during December 2021 over previous month.

Exxon Mobil posted 58 IT jobs in December 2021 and registered an increase of 1.75% over the previous month, followed by TotalEnergies with 56 jobs and a 30.23% growth. Sasol with 39 IT jobs and Henkel AGKGaA with 30 jobs, recorded a 25% drop and a 30.43% rise, respectively, while Air Products and Chemicals recorded a 50% decline with 30 job postings during December 2021.

Country-wise composition of IT hiring in North America’s oil & gas industry

The US commanded a leading presence in the region’s oil & gas industry IT hiring activity with a 90.59% share in December 2021, a 17% decrease over November 2021. Canada featured next with a 7.12% share, down 39.77% over the previous month. Mexico recorded a 2.28% share, a drop of 19.05% compared with November 2021.

Junior Level job postings dominate in December 2021

Junior Level jobs held a share of 63.98%, down by 14.39% from November 2021. Mid Level positions with a 23.92% share, registered a decline of 27.94% compared with the previous month.

In the third place was Entry Level job ads with 11.96% share, down 22.61% over November 2021, while Senior postings accounted for 0.13%, recording a month-on-month decline of 66.67%.
