Oil & Gas industry patent grants decrease 6.73% in Jul-Sep 2021 quarter globally

A total of 35,209 patents were granted across oil & gas industry between July 2021 and September 2021, marking a 6.73% drop over the previous quarter (April 2021-June 2021), according to GlobalData Patents Database.

Patenting activity by top assignee

Out of 3,584 active assignees during the review quarter, Sumitomo Chemical registered a growth change of 51% with 59 patent grants, followed by Halliburton with 0% (252), Saudi Arabian Oil with -11% (274), LG with -18% (334) and Nitto Denko with -23% (111).

Patenting activity across technology area by top assignee

Petrochemicals was the most active technology application with 294 patent grants, followed by Production with 267 and Refining with 65.

The least active IP protected technology applications include Tankers and Pipelines with four and one patent grants, respectively.

Assignee highest and lowest growth rate

Flogistix; Nanjing University; and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals saw the leading growth rates of 600% each in patent grants during Jul-Sep 2021 compared with the previous three-month period, while Bayerip saw the lowest growth rate of -88.9%.

Patenting activity: Leading themes in the Jul-Sep 2021 quarter

Renewable Energy led the oil & gas sector with 906 patents during the review quarter, followed by Hydrogen and Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) with 640 and 597 patents, respectively.

Patenting activity: Sub sector composition

In terms of sub-sector composition, Petrochemicals led IP protection with 22,912 patent grants during the review quarter, followed by Refining with 4,093, Production with 3,588, Tankers with 1,052, and Pipelines with 826.


IP protection activity by region

China led IP protection activity with 13,911 grants and 17,150 new filings during the Jul-Sep 2021 quarter, followed by the US with 4,947 grants and 6,893 new filings.

Japan came in next with 3,778 grants and 5,379 new filings. South Korea and Taiwan stood next with 3,208 grants and 3,514 new filings; 962 grants and 1,407 new filings, respectively.

New entrants in Jul-Sep 2021

PearlRiver Bio, Mindset Pharma, Pierenkemper, ZL EOR Chemicals and Bahcesehir University are the five new entrants in the Oil & Gas industry with four, three, two, two and one patent filings, respectively during the Jul-Sep 2021 quarter.
