South Dakota witnessed a decrease of 6.13% in total oil and gas production to 4,581.09 boe/d in August 2021 when compared with the previous month, according to GlobalData’s USL48 database.

The oil and gas production declined 12.64% in August 2021 from 5,243.9 boe/d in August 2020. On a YTD basis, the total oil and gas production in 2021 decreased by 10.61% from the same period in 2020.

In August 2021, oil production grew 0.2% to 2,945.25 bd as against the previous month, while gas production declined by 15.72% to 9.49 mmcf/d.

On a YTD basis, oil production decreased by 1.97% in 2021 when compared with the same period in 2020, while gas production declined by 20.75%. Out of the total oil and gas production in August 2021, oil held a 64.29% share, while gas had a 35.72% share.


In South Dakota, Continental Resources emerged as the largest oil and gas producer, recording a total oil and gas production at 2,831.83 boe/d in August 2021, a decrease of 12.64% from the previous month. The company held a 48.71% share in oil production and 85.35% share in gas production in August 2021.

On a YTD basis, the company registered a 16.11% decrease in total oil and gas production from the same period in 2020.



Compared with other counties in South Dakota, Harding county recorded the highest oil and gas production, holding a 96.97% share in August 2021. The county witnessed a 6.21% decrease in production to 4,442.07 boe/d in August 2021 when compared with the previous month.

On a YTD basis, Harding registered a decline of 12.27% in total production from the same period in 2020.
