South Dakota witnessed an increase of 1.44% in total oil and gas production to 4,488.8 boe/d in December 2021 when compared with the previous month, according to GlobalData’s USL48 database.

The oil and gas production declined 9.93% in December 2021 from 4,983.91 boe/d in December 2020. On a YTD basis, the total oil and gas production in 2021 decreased by 11.29% from the same period in 2020.

In December 2021, oil production declined 0.38% to 2,798.38 bd as against the previous month, while gas production up by 4.59% to 9.8 mmcf/d.

On a YTD basis, oil production decreased by 0.97% in 2021 when compared with the same period in 2020, while gas production declined by 23.56%. Out of the total oil and gas production in December 2021, oil held a 62.34% share, while gas had a 37.64% share.


In South Dakota, Continental Resources emerged as the largest oil and gas producer, recording a total oil and gas production at 2,867.59 boe/d in December 2021, an increase of 3.57% from the previous month. The company held a 48.87% share in oil production and 88.78% share in gas production in December 2021.

On a YTD basis, the company registered a 16.66% decrease in total oil and gas production from the same period in 2020.
