Utica Shale witnessed a decrease of 0.3% in total oil and gas production to 636,880.05 boe/d in September 2021 when compared with the previous month, according to GlobalData’s USL48 database.

The oil and gas production in Utica declined 27.09% in September 2021 from 873,519.56 boe/d in September 2020. On a YTD basis, the total oil and gas production in the play decreased by 25.45% from the same period in 2020.

In Utica, oil production declined 0.06% in September 2021 as compared with the previous month, while gas production decreased by 0.31% to 3,540.32 mmcf/d.

On a YTD basis, oil production in the play decreased by 38.63% in 2021 when compared with the same period in 2020, while gas production declined by 24.74%. Out of the total oil and gas production in September 2021, oil held a 4.13% share, while gas had a 95.84% share.


In Utica, Ascent Resources emerged as the largest oil and gas producer, recording a total oil and gas production at 186,199.4 boe/d in September 2021 from the previous month. The company held a 30.41% share in oil production and 29.19% share in gas production in September 2021.

On a YTD basis, the company registered a 39.41% decrease in total oil and gas production from the same period in 2020.



Compared with other counties within Utica Shale, Belmont county recorded the highest oil and gas production, holding a 30.51% share in September 2021. The county witnessed in production to 194,292.14 boe/d in September 2021 when compared with the previous month.

On a YTD basis, it registered a decline of 36.25% in total production from the same period in 2020.
