Japan’s Chiyoda has received a contract to execute front-end engineering and design (FEED) activities for the onshore facilities of Qatar Petroleum’s North Field expansion.
After the upgrade, Qatar Petroleum intends to produce an additional 23 million tons per annum (mtpa) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the facilities.
The expansion will also allow the company to raise its production from 77mtpa to 100mtpa.
Qatar Petroleum president and CEO Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi said: “The award of the FEED contract to Chiyoda is a significant milestone in our journey to deliver the first LNG from this new project by the end of 2023.
“The expansion of Qatar’s LNG production from the North Field is an important landmark in Qatar Petroleum’s strategic growth plan and objectives of becoming one of the best national oil & gas companies in the world.
“We are continuing discussions with potential international joint venture (JV) partners for this strategic project to determine an optimised arrangement with the objective of delivering maximum value to the State of Qatar and contribute to the optimal utilisation of Qatar’s natural resources.”

By GlobalDataPursuant to the contract, Chiyoda is required to provide the basic design for the addition of three 7.8mtpa mega-trains of LNG production.
The project will also include an associated pre-investment to allow for the addition of a fourth LNG train in the future.
According to the Qatar Petroleum, the southern sector of North Field will provide around 4.6bn standard cubic feet per day of feed gas to the onshore facilities.
The company expects the processing of the feed gas to provide 185,000 barrels per day of condensate and 8,500 tons per day of LPG to global markets.
