China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) has commenced production from its 100%-owned Lingshui 17-2 gas field located in the South China Sea.

The Lingshui 17-2 field, which is China’s first independent large-sized deepwater discovery, is estimated to hold natural gas resources of more than 100 billion cubic meters.

Situated in a water depth of approximately 1,560m, the CNOOC-operated ultra-deepwater field is expected to have a peak production of 328 million cubic feet of natural gas and 6,751 barrels of condensate per day in 2022.

CNOOC chairman Wang Dongjin said: “Commencement of production in Lingshui 17-2 gas field indicates the Company has taken a leap towards the 1,500m ultra-deepwater field, further releasing the company’s natural gas potential.

“In the future, CNOOC Limited will continue to enhance our exploration and development activities, strive to expand reserves and production, increase the proportion of green, low-carbon as well as clean energy, and hence to support the goal of carbon emission peak and carbon neutrality to be achieved at an early date.”

The field development involved semi-submersible production platform featuring condensate oil storage capacity, a mooring system, as well as a set of subsea production system and subsea pipeline.

The subsea production system comprises 11 horizontal subsea trees, four manifolds, topside and subsea control system, and a vertical tie-in connection system.

The field is located in the northern Qiongdongnan Basin, which also holds the Lingshui 25-1, Lingshui 18-1 and Lingshui 18-2 gas discoveries.

According to the estimates, the Lingshui 17-2 field will supply more than three billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas annually to Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Hainan.
