Eni has begun start-up operations at the Meleiha phase two (MP2) gas project in Egypt’s Western Desert, advancing the creation of a new gas hub within the Merged Meleiha concession.
The Italian energy company is executing the development through Agiba Petroleum, its joint venture (JV) with the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC).

Once fully operational, the new processing facility will be capable of handling up to 100 million standard cubic feet per day (mscf/d) of gas.
According to Eni, the launch of MP2 marks the development of a new gas hub in the region and will increase the area’s gas processing capacity.
The company stated that these developments are expected to contribute to the growth of Egypt’s domestic gas supply and the utilisation of the country’s existing energy resources.
The MP2 project comprises new development wells, gathering systems, trunklines and a dedicated gas export pipeline.
These facilities are expected to connect additional production from the Western Desert fields to Egypt’s broader gas infrastructure network, supporting more efficient resource use and faster commercialisation of gas output.
The MP2 project has been developed with a focus on operational excellence, safety and environmental standards.
Eni’s presence in Egypt dates back to 1954 and it is currently among the highest producers of hydrocarbons in the country.
Its output, reported for 2025, stands at approximately 242,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day on an equity basis.
Eni’s activities in Egypt extend across exploration, development and production in the Western Desert, the Gulf of Suez, the Nile Delta and the Eastern Mediterranean.
Last month, Eni divested a 10% interest in the Baleine offshore oil project in Côte d’Ivoire to the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR). After the deal, Eni retains a 37.25% interest, Vitol holds 30%, Petroci owns 22.75% and SOCAR has acquired the remaining 10%.
