Equinor has increased production at the Vigdis oil field in the North Sea by using an additional subsea pump.

The pump started operating in May and has helped in increasing output by around 16 million barrels.

Located in the Tampen area in block 34/7 (PL 089), Vigdis subsea field became onstream in 1997 and has delivered oil through the Snorre field for 24 years.

The field was initially expected to deliver around 200 million barrels of oil equivalent. However, the new estimates have increased the figure to 475 million barrels.

Equinor Snorre field vice-president Asbjørn Løve said: “Increasing production from existing fields is important for value creation on the Norwegian continental shelf. We have further developed Vigdis in several phases over several years.

“It makes me proud that we, together with our partners and suppliers, have managed to further increase the value creation from the field.”

Equinor operates the Vigdis field with a 41.5% ownership interest. The other stakeholders are Petoro (30%), Vår Energi (16.1%), Idemitsu Petroleum Norge (9.6%) and Wintershall Dea Norge (2.8%).

In December 2018, Equinor and its partners decided to invest Nkr1.4bn ($160m) for the Vigdis Boosting project, a year before it got the permission to extend the operating life of the field.

This involved installing a multiphase boosting station to increase production from existing wells. The station is connected to the existing pipeline between Vigdis and Snorre A.

Equinor project development senior vice-president Geir Tungesvik said: “Providing new oil barrels at a highly competitive price, the project has been completed with excellent HSE results.”

Recently, Equinor announced its second-quarter results. The Norwegian company posted a net income of $1.94bn in the quarter.
