Norway’s energy giant Equinor has awarded a contract to Aker Solutions to deliver a submersible wireless installer for tubing (SWIFT) for the Johan Castberg field in the Barents Sea.

Located around 100km north of the Snøhvit field in the Barents Sea, the Johan Castberg field is expected to produce for more than 30 years and is estimated to hold proven volumes of between 400 and 650 million barrels of oil.

Activities are planned to start in June 2024 and continue for two years.

Aker Solutions claimed that SWIFT offers operators the advantage of opex and carbon-footprint savings by providing umbilical-less tubing hanger (TH) installations and retrievals.

The contract represents Aker’s first commercial campaign for the SWIFT remotely operated TH tool.

Under the contract, Aker will deliver SWIFT for 18 tubing hanger installations at the Johan Castberg field.

Aker expects the SWIFT to eliminate the need for 60 tonnes of topside equipment and associated maintenance and transport for the Johan Castberg installations.

Aker Solutions Subsea executive vice-president Maria Peralta said: “With SWIFT, we bring an integrated package of products, tooling and offshore personnel to Johan Castberg TH installation operations.

“We are certain that our consolidated offerings will add value to our first umbilical-less operation and reduce operational risks.”

Aker plans to manufacture SWIFT, which was developed in partnership with Envirex, at its facilities in Bryne, Norway.
