ExxonMobil has shut down the Hides gas conditioning plant in the wake of an earthquake that measured 7.5 on the Richter scale struck in the Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) highlands.

The company shut the plant and wellpads as a precautionary measure while it undertakes full assessments.

Following the seismic incident, the company activated an emergency response plan.

In a statement, ExxonMobil PNG stated: “We are continuing to assess damage to our facilities in Southern Highlands and Hela provinces.

“Preliminary reports from the Hides gas conditioning plant indicate the administration buildings, living quarters and the mess hall have sustained damage.”

Other stakeholders in the PNG LNG project include Oil Search, Kumul Petroleum, Santos, JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration and Mineral Resources Development Company.

“Preliminary reports from the Hides gas conditioning plant indicate the administration buildings, living quarters and the mess hall have sustained damage.”

The $19bn project is operated by ExxonMobil and includes gas production and processing facilities that stretch from Hela, Southern Highlands, Western and Gulf provinces to Port Moresby in Central Province.

Among the facilities, the project has a liquefaction and storage facility near Port Moresby.

The project also comprises more than 700km of onshore and offshore pipeline that connects the facilities.

Having commenced liquefied natural gas (LNG) production in April 2014, the project supplies to customers such as China Petroleum and Chemical (Sinopec), Osaka Gas Company, The Tokyo Electric Power Company and CPC.

Production in 2016 stood at 7.9 million tonnes of LNG.

It is expected that the PNG LNG Project will produce an excess of 11 trillion cubic feet of LNG over the next 30 years.

In a separate statement, Oil Search stated that its production operations in the PNG Highlands are in the process of being shut down.
