Golden Pass Products is seeking approval to construct and operate a liquefied natural gas (LNG) project at its facility in Sabine Pass, Texas.
The company has submitted a formal application to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in the US to secure approval for the project.
The FERC application will require environmental impact assessments, reviews by other agencies and public comment periods, with a final investment decision anticipated in 2015.
Golden Pass Products would then invest approximately $10bn over five years to construct the proposed project, which has secured US Department of Energy (DOE) authorisation for exports to Free Trade Agreement (FTA) nations.
The project, which is awaiting DOE approval to export to non-FTA countries, is expected to create 45,000 direct and indirect jobs in the US during the construction phase. The project would then generate around 3,800 new jobs across the US during its 25-year operations phase.
Golden Pass LNG president Eric Pletcher said that the FERC permitting process is an important step towards making the project a reality.
