Engineering design firm Aecom Technology has secured a design-build contract from National Grid, in partnership with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, the US.
As per the terms of the contract, the engineering design firm will offer engineering, procurement and construction services for the Newtown Creek Renewable Natural Gas Project in New York city.
The project includes injection of pipeline-quality gas into National Grid’s current gas network by designing and building a purification system.
This purification system would convert biogas by-product from the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant into renewable natural gas, which would be used for residential and commercial purposes.
Construction of the system is expected to begin this year and will be completed by fall 2016.
The project is considered to be one of the first in the country wherein renewable gas is directly injected into a local distribution system.
