Australian oil and gas exploration and production company AWE has commissioned a rig to drill the Atlas-1 well on the Titan production sharing contract (PSC) in the East Java Basin, offshore Indonesia.

The well will target a large gas prospect 35km north-east of the Lengo gas discovery, which tested gas at 12.8 million cubic feet per day in 2008.

If successful, Atlas and Lengo will have the combined potential to hold up to one trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas.

Drilling on the well will begin in March 2012.

AWE is operator of the Titan PSC and holds a 40% interest, with Baruna Oil & Gas and Mitra Energy, each holding 25%, and Sillo Maritime Perdana with 10%.
