Bechtel Canada has been named as the contractor for the $400m expansion of FortisBC Energy’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Delta, British Columbia (BC).

The expansion will add about one billion cubic feet of LNG storage and 34,000 gigajoules per day of gas liquefaction capacity.

The expansion is expected to meet increased market demand for LNG in BC and provide an expected $4m a year in taxes to several levels of government over time.

FortisBC operates the only two LNG facilities in BC, which include the Mt. Hayes facility in Ladysmith on Vancouver Island and the Tilbury facility.

"The expansion of the Tilbury facility will enable FortisBC to better support the province in the development of natural gas for the transportation sector."

Construction work on the Tilbury expansion project is expected to start in September 2015, with completion planned in 2016.

The LNG plant on Tilbury Island, which has been operating since 1971, is located near the FortisBC transmission pipeline system near Vancouver.

The Tilbury plant, which has several features designed for the safe handling of LNG, is capable of liquefying 120,000 cubic metres of natural gas per day.

The expansion of the Tilbury facility will enable FortisBC to better support the province in the development of natural gas for the transportation sector.

FortisBC Energy employs around 1,800 people in BC and serves about 945,000 customers in 125 BC communities.

The company owns and operates about 46,000km of natural gas transmission and distribution pipelines.
