A blast that occurred at Rompetrol’s Petromedia refinery in Romania has claimed the life of one person and injured four others.

The incident took place in the area of the vacuum distillation plant, following which the company neutralised the fire and secured the incident area.

Rompetrol said that the firemen teams of Petromidia refinery and the Midia-Navodari Firemen Station were present at the site to put out the fire.

The company has set up a team comprising specialists and an official investigation to determine the cause of the incident.

Following the blast, the installation is shut down and the refinery's activity is decreasing.

Rompetrol said that the representatives took all the necessary measures in order to safely operate the refinery.

Based on the measurements of air emissions, there were no recorded values that endanger the lives of employees and communities from the vicinity of the refinery, the company said.

The authorities received all the necessary documents for the investigations carried out by the refinery representatives.

At present, the refinery is operating at a reduced capacity.
