Capstone Turbine’s distributor MicroTurbine Power has been selected to deliver two C600 microturbines for an oil field project in Libya.
The new order is expected to be commissioned in late 2016.
Capstone microturbines have a single moving part, an air bearing, no coolants or lubricants, and are available with minimal maintenance requirements. They are suitable for high ambient temperature and harsh remote environments.
The microturbines are diesel-fired, installed in a standby power application and configured to back up critical loads.
When a power outage occurs, the microturbines will provide backup power to onsite water pumps as well as other oil and gas equipment.
They also generate electricity that can cover the energy needs of the site.
Capstone Turbine president and CEO Darren Jamison said: "We have identified Africa as one of our strategic growth markets along with Mexico, South America, Eastern Europe, Australia, China and the Middle East.
"Africa provides considerable growth opportunities in traditional applications such as oil and gas, industrial CHP and biogas, and in remote micro-grid applications that successfully operate in concert with wind, solar and storage technologies.
"Concentrated efforts on improving our geographical diversification are a key strategic initiative and part of our overall business recovery plan."
In February 2015, Capstone received an order for five C800 microturbines for another phase of the Los Ramones pipeline project in Northeastern Mexico.
The International Energy Agency said that the growth in Libya’s installed electricity generation reflects higher economic growth and better investment in the oil and natural gas sectors.
