UK-based DSM Demolition has announced plans for a new base in Orkney, off the coast of Scotland.

The facility is set for Lyness on the east coast of Hoy, and is intended to take advantage of the expected boom in North Sea oil and gas decommissioning work.

DSM Demolition consultant Graham Crowe said: “The project has potential to create a significant number of local jobs and that local companies will secure further spin-off benefits from supplying support services.

"The substantial, long-term opportunity provided by decommissioning offers an economic driver for employment and community benefits for many years."

“The substantial, long-term opportunity provided by decommissioning offers an economic driver to provide employment and community benefits to Hoy and the rest of Orkney for many years."

Prior to selecting Lyness as a location, the company explored various sites along the east and west coasts of Scotland.

This site has been selected because of its existing harbour and safe, deepwater anchorage, combined with access to the oil and gas fields through Scapa Flow.

DSM plans to perform design project design work after consulting potential business clients such as oilfield operators.

The company will develop the concept by working with Orkney Island Council, local businesses and the Hoy and wider Orkney community.

DSM will submit a formal planning application at the end of this year and the facility is scheduled to open in 2018.
