Eni has discovered gas and condensates in the Nyonie Deep exploration prospect located in block D4, about 13km offshore Gabon and 50km from the capital city of Libreville.
The company made the discovery in the presalt of Gabon with the NFW Nyonie Deep 1 well, which was drilled in 28m of water to a total depth of 4,314m.
The well encountered a thick 320m hydrocarbon-bearing section in the presalt clastic sequence of Aptian age.
Eni said the structure, which extends over 40km², covers two offshore exploration blocks, which are both operated by Eni with a 100% interest.
According to the company, preliminary estimates suggest the gas discovery is significant, with initial potential in place estimated at 500 million boe.
Eni will undertake an appraisal campaign to examine the discovery’s potential and start studies for the possible commercial exploitation of the field.

It is the third field to be discovered in shallow waters in such plays, following Nene Marine and Litchendjili Marine in Congo.
The company said the total estimated potential of the discoveries is about 3 billion boe, although this could be increased.
Eni, which has operated in Gabon via its affiliate Eni Gabon since 2009, presently has exploration activities in four licenses, with two offshore and two onshore.
