Italy-based oil company Eni has made a gas discovery at the Mamba South 1 discovery well, offshore Mozambique.

The discovery well is located in water depths of 1,585m, 40km off the Cabo Delgado coast, and is the first exploration well in Offshore Area 4.

A continuous gas pay of 212m in high-quality Oligocene sands was discovered from the well, which was drilled to reach a total depth of around 5,000m.

On completion of drilling and testing activities, the rig will move to drill the second commitment well, Mamba North 1.

Eni is the operator of Offshore Area 4 with a 70% participating interest, Galp Energia has 10%, KOGAS holds 10% and ENH has 10% (carried through the exploration phase).
