Italian oil and gas firm Eni has signed an agreement to explore for hydrocarbons in the Republic of Congo’s coastal basin.

The agreement, which extends from onshore Mayombe to the deep-offshore, follows discussions with the Congo Government that resulted in the extension of permits around strategic resources.

The government has extended permissions for Madingo, Marine and Marine VI VII fields.

Eni, which has been active in the Republic of Congo since 1968, produced approximately 120,000bpd in the country in 2013.

"In Sub-Saharan Africa, Eni operates in Angola, Ghana, Gabon, Mozambique, Nigeria, Togo, Kenya and Liberia."

The company established Agip Recherches Congo, now Eni Congo, and started exploring for oil and gas offshore from Pointe Noire in an area of 9,797km².

In 2013, Eni acquired the operatorship of Ngolo exploration block, which is part of the Cuvette Basin, in a joint-venture (JV) with the Congolese state company Société Nationale des Pétroles du Congo (SNPC).
