Energy company Eversource is set to invest in a multi-phase resiliency project in Danbury, in a bid to further protect and strengthen the natural gas delivery system in the US.

The $3.5m investment will be made this year, and aims to ensure reliable service for Eversource gas customers in the region.

Eversource gas operations president Bill Akley said: “These resiliency projects will further reduce the likelihood of any outages and further enhance the safety of our system by linking more sections of our distribution system together.”

The project is expected to complete in 2019, and will see the company lay more than 4.5 miles of gas pipeline to connect the natural gas distribution systems in Danbury.

Eversource noted that the project will ensure the supply of natural gas within the community in accordance with the needs of customers. The linking of the systems is expected to offer greater potential access to natural gas in nearby areas.

"These resiliency projects will further reduce the likelihood of any outages and further enhance the safety of our system by linking more sections of our distribution system together."

The company is currently engaged in work related to the first phase of the project, which involves the installation of more than 1.5 miles of pipeline from the west end of Danbury along Routes 6 / 202 to the Westside Campus of Western Connecticut State University.

Pipeline work will be taken up from the university to an Eversource gas facility near Danbury’s downtown area in the next two years.

The company intends to provide a stronger gas delivery system to the school via the project, as well as a reliable system from Danbury north to New Milford.

Phase one of the development is slated for completion by the end of November, while the second phase is scheduled to commence in April 2018.

Eversource is also engaged in installing a new line from Plainfield to Franklin and from Wallingford to Middletown.
