Initially, oil-in-place reserves at this newly discovered site are estimated to be eight million tonnes.

The company specialists opined that the location may contain multiple smaller deposits.

The company discovered the Novosamarskoye field after drilling an exploratory well in the location. 

Gazpromneft Orenburg decided to drill the exploratory well after procuring 3D seismic data and analytical support from Gazprom Neft Joint Scientific and Research Centre that assisted in selecting well location, estimation of reserves and also in drilling.

Gazprom Neft Geological Prospecting head Vadim Shashel said: “The discovery of the Novosamarskoye field confirms our view regarding the presence of several fields at the Uransky licence block. Increasing precision in geological prospecting together with enhanced oil recovery rates mean Gazprom Neft is able to bring smaller reserves into development on a viable basis.

A detailed plan of geology and field development is currently being devised with a feasible production strategy at the location.

The company has already submitted an oil production licence application to the Federal Agency for Subsoil Use in Rosnedra.

It expects to receive the approval by the first quarter of this year.
