Latin American oil and gas exploration and production firm GeoPark has successfully tested the Jacana 5 appraisal well in the Jacana oil field located within the Llanos 34 block, Colombia.

The Llanos 34 block is operated by the company with a 45% working interest.

The Jacana 5 appraisal well was drilled to a total depth of 11,467ft and a test was carried out with an electric submersible pump in the Guadalupe formation.

Stabilised flow rates of the well will be determined with the help of additional production history.

Surface facilities are in place and the well has already begun production.

Prior to the Jacana 5 well, the company drilled the Jacana 4 and Jacana 3 wells, through which the size of the Jacana field was expanded by extending the north-western limit of the field.

The well was drilled 780m north of the Jacana 3 appraisal well further down to a bottom-hole location below the previous lowest-known oil.

"Congratulations to our team for the strong test results from the Jacana 5 well, and another important development in the expanding Llanos 34 Block success story."

GeoPark CEO James Park said: “Congratulations to our team for the strong test results from the Jacana 5 well, and another important development in the expanding Llanos 34 Block success story.

“Although test rates are preliminary, it highlights the reserve potential of the Jacana field, where further appraisal and development drilling is required to delineate and understand the full extent of this productive field.”

In order to determine the full extent of the oil accumulation, the company expects to continue exploring and appraising the Tigana / Jacana oil trend.

After testing the Jacana 5 well, the rig will move north-east along the trend to the Tigana field to continue GeoPark’s programme of drilling five more wells in the Llanos 34 Block before the end of the year.
