Halliburton, through its subsidiary Sperry Drilling, has unveiled the Radian azimuthal gamma ray and inclination service in order to improve the accuracy of the wellbore placement.

The geosteering Radian solution provides borehole images and continuous inclination measurements, enabling operators to ensure accurate placement of the wellbore in the sweet spot for enhanced production and reduced costs per BOE.

In a bid to offer improved reservoir insight, it uses four gamma-ray detectors arranged evenly around the circumference of the tool to produce real-time azimuthal images.

Sperry Drilling vice-president Lamar Duhon said: "We developed the Radian service to provide operators with greater reservoir insight compared to traditional gamma ray tools.

"In collaboration with our customers, we engineered this solution to deliver real-time, high-quality gamma-ray images to help our customers make better geosteering decisions for optimal wellbore placement and maximum reservoir contact.

"We developed the Radian service to provide operators with greater reservoir insight compared to traditional gamma ray tools."

“It is aimed at helping operators achieve greater production and lower costs, especially in unconventional reservoirs."

Offering greater data to operators, the solution enables real-time geosteering decision making for accurate well placement and improved reservoir contact.

According to the company, the optional inclinometer package monitors the orientation of the well on a continuous basis, thereby ensuring reduced wellbore tortuosity.

It further noted that the design of the tool is compatible with all drilling systems, including high-torque motors and rotary steerable systems.

The tool is designed to withstand high-pressure, high-temperature environments up to 20,000psi and 347°F.
