UK-based Intertek has been selected to provide third party inspection services to support the procurement of energy infrastructure company Jemena’s A$800m ($591m) Northern Gas Pipeline (NGP) project.
In November last year, the Northern Territory Government selected Jemena to build and operate the North East Gas Interconnector, which is now known as the NGP.
The proposed 623km pipeline will connect Northern Australia’s vast gas fields to the east coast gas market and would run from Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory to Mount Isa in Queensland.
Under the contract, Intertek will provide services at the point of fabrication.
The company will also deploy a quality inspectors team to oversee manufacture of the pipe work including quality of welding and steel composition.
Intertek industry services business development manager Sheldon Harvey said: "The award of this inspection contract is testament to our experience in the development of major oil and gas projects, and the result of our long-term relationship with Jemena.
"Our technical and qualified inspectors are positioned at Jemena’s suppliers and supported by a project leadership team in Sydney and Melbourne.
"They will be involved at various points of the project to provide quality assurance leadership in achieving key milestones and mitigation of any potential issues, which may arise during the manufacturing process."
The NGP project will open up untapped resources in Northern Australia and unlock the next phase of economic growth for the Northern Territory, the company said.
