Lundin Petroleum has started oil production from the Edvard Grieg field in the Norwegian North Sea.

The Edvard Grieg field was discovered in 2007 and is part of PL338 licence on the Utsira High in the North Sea, 180km west of Stavanger.

Edvard Grieg is estimated to hold gross 2P reserves of 187 million barrels of oil equivalents and has been developed with a steel jacket platform resting on the seabed.

The topsides weigh 22,500t and include a processing facility and utility module, as well as living quarters.

"The project execution capabilities proven by this delivery, coupled with the ingenuity of our exploration team, provide a hugely exciting platform for further growth in Norway."

Kværner served as main contractor for the works related to the field along with other Norwegian and foreign subcontractors.

Aker Solutions performed the engineering work, while Apply Leirvik delivered the living quarters and helicopter deck.

The jacket was constructed at Kværner Verdal and the platform deck was built at Kværner Stord and Aker Solutions in Egersund. The export pipelines were constructed and installed by Statoil Petroleum.

Lundin Norway managing director Kristin Færøvik said: "The project execution capabilities proven by this delivery, coupled with the ingenuity of our exploration team, provide a hugely exciting platform for further growth in Norway."

Development drilling at the field will resume soon with the Rowan Viking jack-up rig.

In addition, a total of ten production wells and four water injection wells would be drilled with plateau production expected during the second half of 2016. The drilling is expected to continue through 2018.

Edvard Grieg will receive oil and gas from the neighbouring Ivar Aasen field for further processing.

Grane pipeline will be used to transport oil to the Sture terminal located on the west coast of Norway, while gas will be transported with the help of a separate pipeline system to St Fergus in Scotland.

Lundin Norway received final approval for the plan for development and operation for the Edvard Grieg field from the Norwegian Parliament in June 2012.
