Lundin Petroleum has plugged and abandoned its third exploration well as a dry hole in block PM308A, offshore the east coast of Malaysia.
The Batu Hitam well was drilled using the Offshore Courageous rig to test the hydrocarbon potential of a large basement high structure east of the block.
The main objective of drilling was the Oligocene sandstones in a four-way dip closure and fractured pre-Tertiary basement in the underlying horst block.
The company encountered Oligocene sandstones with good reservoir quality and containing gas with high concentrations of carbon dioxide.
Lundin moved the rig to drill the Janglau-1 prospect, which is located 47km north of Batu Hitam-1 to test a new play concept in an independent sub-basin in the same block.
Block PM308A is owned by Lundin with a 35% interest, JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration with 40% and Petronas with 25%.
