UK-based Magma Global has signed an agreement with BP and Subsea 7 in a project to qualify the company’s corrosion-resistant carbon-fibre m-pipe as the next-generation of subsea pipelines.
National Composites Centre (NCC) and Innovate UK are also offering their support to the new programme, which runs for 30 months targeting 6in to 12in pipes for risers and jumper systems for deepwater environments.
The programme also includes laminate testing, and tests for single and combined loads. It would deliver the necessary inspection techniques to verify the systems’ long-term integrity.
Subsea 7 technology vice-president Thomas Sunde said that composite pipe technology can improve cost-effectiveness and remove the uncertainties of schedule delivery for many subsea solutions.
Sunde said: "Subsea 7’s focus with such initiatives is primarily to benefit our customers and to support collaborative research and development with key suppliers."
The lightweight, fully bonded, composite thermoplastic Magma’s m-pipe is stronger than steel and traditional flexible materials. It is suitable for the offshore oil and gas industry.

By GlobalDatam-pipe is manufactured from carbon-fibre and PEEK polymer materials, and has been designed to be suitable for a wide spectrum of fluids and gases.
In order to meet growing demand for deepwater risers, jumpers and intervention lines, Magma Global is currently expanding capacity at its headquarters and manufacturing base in Portsmouth, Hampshire.
Magma Global commercial director Charles Tavner said: "Magma Global is delighted that BP and Subsea 7 have chosen to collaborate in the qualification and deployment of Magma’s m-pipe technology.
"This programme is a brilliant example of how government, a major oil company, a major SURF contractor and a technology supplier can work together to deliver significant reductions in risk and cost for offshore field development."
