Nexans has supplied the first batch of direct electrical heating (DEH) systems to the BP-operated Shah Deniz Stage 2 development project in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea.

The full package includes 130km of cables and accessories that will provide flow assurance for ten subsea flowlines serving the high-pressure gas / condensate development.

Nexans expects to complete the second and final delivery in 2016.

The contract, worth around €100m, is part of a ten-year frame agreement between Nexans and BP, covering the delivery of umbilical cables, DEH systems, accessories and services for several deepwater oil and gas projects worldwide.

Nexans said DEH is a technology for flow assurance, developed to safeguard the wellstream flow through the pipeline to the platform.

Nexans Norway hybrid underwater cables division executive vice-president Krister Granlie said: "We are delighted to have achieved this important milestone in the world’s most complex and largest DEH project by completing the first delivery to BP."

Shah Deniz Stage 2 will add an additional 16 billion cubic metres per annum (bcma) of gas production to the approximated 9 bcma produced by Shah Deniz Stage 1.

The development will help increase European energy security by bringing Caspian gas resources to markets in Europe.

The Shah Deniz field was discovered in 1999, about 70km south-east of Baku, with water depths of 50m to 550m.

It is estimated that the field holds 40 trillion cubic feet of gas, with its reservoirs situated approximately 6,000m below sea level.
