The North America region is expected to witness the highest pipeline length additions at 59,962km by 2021, according to a report by GlobalData.

Titled ‘H1 2017 Global Length and Capital Expenditure Outlook for Oil and Gas Pipelines – Surge in New Pipeline Announcements’, the report provides details of the oil and gas pipelines planned to be added across the world up to 2021.

The total length of key global oil and gas transmission pipelines is expected to increase by 11% from 1.9 million km in March 2017 to 2.1 million kilometres by 2021. North America will lead globally during the period, adding 59,962km of transmission pipelines with a capex of $153bn.

By 2021, 54% of the transmission pipeline length will be added in the US, India, Russia, Canada, and Iran, which are expected to add 110,748km of pipeline length in total. The five countries are expected to spend a total of $291bn on the planned pipelines.

Compared to the previous report published in December 2016, 30 new natural gas pipelines were announced, including the African Renaissance Project (2,600km), Eastern Siberia-Western Siberia (2,000km), and EUGAL (864 km). In addition, three new natural gas liquids (NGL) pipelines were announced.

The number of new crude oil pipelines announced since the previous report is 12, including Express Platte Twin Expansion (1,561km), EPIC (1,175km), and Agadem-Kaduna (1,000km). Furthermore, new product pipelines were announced, including Lamu-Addis Ababa, Hassan-Cherlapalli, and Tebeen-Helwan.

Some of the longest pipelines in the planned projects include Canada’s Energy East oil pipeline (4,500km), Russia’s TurkStream (Russia-Turkey Section) gas pipeline (3,780km) and Power of Siberia (Russia Section-I) gas pipeline (3,200km).

In terms of companies, Gazprom will add the most planned pipeline length of 20,531km with a capex of $85bn, followed by TransCanada Corporation, China National Petroleum Corporation, and Indian Oil Corporation with a combined capex of $75bn.

A total of eight pipelines were cancelled, including Katherine-Gove (gas pipeline), Texas Access (oil pipeline), Northern Gateway Import (product pipeline) and Bluegrass (NGL pipeline), while 20 pipelines were stalled, compared to the previous report.
