The Mariner heavy-oil field features two shallow reservoir sections, which include the deeper Maureen Formation at 1,492m and the shallower Heimdal reservoir at 1,227m.

The development will contribute more than 250 million barrels of reserves with an average plateau production of around 55,000 barrels per day.

Statoil operates the Mariner field with a 65.11% stake, while JX Nippon Exploration and Production (UK) and Dyas Mariner have 28.89% and 6% interests, respectively.

Statoil Production UK managing director Gunnar Breivik said: "This is a very significant agreement for the Mariner project and the result of an innovative, new procurement approach, where the supplier will work as an integrated part of the Statoil team delivering most of the drilling and well services on the Mariner field."

The contract with Schlumberger also includes options for the Statoil-operated Bressay field on the UKCS, presently in concept evaluation phase.

It will also work as a framework agreement for exploration drilling on the UKCS where Statoil has the option to use Schlumberger for any of the drilling and well services covered by the scope of the contract.
