Norway-based Sebastian will provide dynamic positioning (DP) training to drilling contractor Songa Offshore’s new super-rigs crew.

Sebastian plans to deliver training for the first rig, the Songa Equinox, which will arrive in Norway in mid-October, before rig operations start from Statoil’s Troll field in November.

Sebastian CEO Johannes Kristian Bjøringsøy said that the four super-rigs, or ‘CAT-D units’, are being built in South Korea for Songa Offshore.

Under the training contract, Sebastian plans to create the content of a training programme for the crew on-board.

The module-based training will be provided for the crews on all four rigs in a total of 12 shifts.

The Songa Equinox is equipped for up to 500m water depth, and the flexible design allows for future deepwater and arctic operations.

Songa Offshore won a contract for two rigs with Statoil in 2011 and for another two in 2012.

The first two rigs that are being built will operate on the Troll field, while the last two will operate further north on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
