Smaller scale gas-to-liquids (GTL) technology innovator Velocys has entered into a joint venture with Waste Management, NRG Energy, and Ventech Engineers International to develop GTL plants in the US, Canada, UK and China.
The joint venture will use a combination of renewable biogas including landfill gas and natural gas to pursue the development of multiple plants. Waste Management plans to supply renewable gas and also project sites in certain cases.
The joint venture’s first commercial facility will be a plant at Waste Management’s East Oak landfill site in Oklahoma, US. Detailed engineering is currently being completed for the project, and final draft permitting documents have also been submitted.
Following a final decision on whether to proceed, the joint venture expects to commence development activities for additional facilities soon.
Velocys CEO Roy Lipski said that the company is providing FT technology to Waste Management, NRG and Ventech in the development of projects that unlock the potential of landfill gas and biogas.
"This project is a milestone in the development of GTL in the US. Smaller-scale GTL has the potential to achieve significant installed capacity in North America a long time before any large scale conventional facility comes on stream," Lipski added.
