Wärtsilä has been awarded a turnkey contract by Manga LNG Oy, a joint venture between Outokumpu Group, Ruukki Metals Oy, Gasum Oy and EPV Energy, for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving terminal in Tornio, northern Finland.
The €100m contract is conditional on the receipt of investment support and Manga LNG Oy’s contracts with other parties, including gas suppliers.
Outokumpu Tornio steel mill will be the main user of natural gas from the terminal, which will also serve other industries, mines, and potential gas consumers in the region.
The terminal will also supply LNG to ships, such as a new icebreaker that is planned to operate in the Tornio and Bay of Bothnia region.
Manga LNG Oy board chairman Pekka Erkkilä said that the Tornio Manga LNG terminal is a long-term infrastructure investment programme.
"The beneficiaries include shipping and road transportation companies, power and heat utilities, and other industrial and mining companies in northern Europe," Erkkilä added.

By GlobalDataWärtsilä Power Plants president Vesa Riihimäki said that the terminal will enable clean and competitively priced fuel to be available for industrial consumers in the Bay of Bothnia region.
"This is a large and extremely important project, and we see the selection of Wärtsilä Power Plants to engineer, supply, and construct the new LNG receiving terminal as an acknowledgement of our expertise and experience in engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) project execution, in LNG handling systems, and in the use of LNG as fuels," Riihimäki added.
Wärtsilä is combining its strong power plants EPC capability with its industry leading LNG gas handling technology for the first time with the contract.
