Oil and gas exploration company Real Energy has commenced a drilling programme at the Tamarama-2 well in Australia’s Cooper Basin.

Tamarama-2 is the first well to be drilled under the two-well gas appraisal drilling programme at Real Energy’s Windorah gas project in south-west Queensland. The project is expected to improve commercial gas flow.

The well was spudded to the depth of 710m and pressure testing of the blow out preventers was carried out before drilling out the production hole.

If the wells prove successful, the company intends to establish pilot production.

“Real Energy is utilising the knowledge obtained from the drilling, testing and fracture stimulation of Tamarama-1.”

Real Energy is utilising the knowledge obtained from the drilling, testing and fracture stimulation of Tamarama-1 in the drilling programme, which saw the construction of a deviated well design suitable for multi-stage fracking.

Tamarama-1 was drilled in 2014, followed by a five-stage fracking programme in 2016 to improve well productivity and achieve commercial flow rates.

Last month, the company declared that Tamarama-1 started flowing gas at rates ranging between 0.5 million cubic feet per day (mmcfpd) and 2mmcfpd.

The firm believes the wells will provide an opportunity to potentially convert its contingent resources into reserves, and ultimately into production.

In addition, Real Energy plans to start proving up the delivery of gas play within ATP927, which is estimated to contain a prospective resource of 13.7 trillion cubic feet of gas initially in place.
