Senex Energy has started commissioning of the Roma North natural gas processing facility in the western Surat Basin in Australia.

The commissioning involves safety and quality checks and leads the way for the facility’s start-up and steady-state operations. Senex has achieved mechanical completion of the facility, including four gas compressors with an initial processing capacity of around six petajoules (PJ) a year.

Construction work on the Roma North gas processing facility and an associated pipeline began in November last year. The contract to build the infrastructure was awarded to Wasco (Australia).

The Roma North facility also includes a dehydration unit designed to remove water from the gas and a 5.6km pipeline connection to the Comet Ridge-Wallumbilla Pipeline.

Senex noted that the initial capacity of the processing facility can be expanded to around 9PJ/year at a low cost. Furthermore, modular design will enable further expansion of capacity up to 18PJ/year.

Senex Energy managing director and CEO Ian Davies noted that the Roma North processing facility will benefit the company’s long-term growth and the east coast gas market.

Davies said: “Senex is the first independent Queensland natural gas company in recent years to start commissioning a greenfield processing facility.

“This outcome is testament to Senex’s considerable operational capabilities, which are setting us up for further growth as we begin the next phase of drilling this month and plan future appraisal activity.

“The Roma North facility can rapidly be expanded at low cost, allowing maximum recovery of gas reserves from Roma North and the wider Western Surat area.”

The final investment decision for Roma North was confirmed in October last year. Roma North is part of the company’s Western Surat Gas Project in Queensland.

In 2015, Senex entered a 20-year gas sales agreement to supply up to 50TJ/day of sales gas from its Western Surat Gas Project to GLNG.

Senex noted that it expects to deliver processed sales gas to GLNG by the middle of this year.

Meanwhile, the Queensland Government has awarded preferred tender status to Senex for natural gas acreage in Surat Basin.
