TechnipFMC has won a contract to provide engineering, procurement, supply, construction and commissioning services for Novatek’s planned $21bn Arctic liquefied natural gas (LNG) 2 project in Russia.

The project involves the construction of an integrated LNG facility with an annual liquefaction capacity of 19.8 million tonnes.

Under the terms of the contract, the first LNG train of the project is scheduled to be launched in 2023.

Novatek management board chairman Leonid Mikhelson said: “The team, which implemented the unique Yamal LNG project in record time and on budget, has now joined an even larger and more innovative project.

“We are confident that the accumulated experience of mutual cooperation on the construction of LNG plants in the Arctic zone will also ensure the successful and timely implementation of our new project Arctic LNG 2.”

To be located on the Gydan Peninsula in the north of Siberia, the LNG project will feature three trains with a capacity of 6.6 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) each. These trains will be built using gravity-based structure (GBS) platforms.

The project will provide access to more than seven billion barrels of oil equivalent of hydrocarbons’ resources in the onshore Utrenneye gas and condensate field.

Novatek owns a 90% interest in Arctic LNG 2 and the remaining 10% is held by French energy company Total.

“Under the terms of the contract, the first LNG train of the project is scheduled to be launched in 2023.”

Earlier this year, Novatek awarded a contract to Siemens for the supply of compressor equipment for the LNG project.

A final investment decision on the Arctic LNG 2 project is anticipated to be made in the second half of this year.

Last month, the Russian company reached a heads of agreement with China’s CNOOC to sell a 10% interest in the project.
