Swiss offshore drilling contractor Transocean has purchased two 20,000psi (20K) blowout preventer (BOP) stacks from National Oilwell Varco (NOV).

The 20K BOP stack is developed to enable safe and effective drilling in challenging offshore reservoirs. It helps to optimise uptime and reduce unplanned stack pulls to streamline drilling operations. The system can be deployed at high-pressure reservoirs and can be used in ultra-deepwater sites.

According to NOV, the sale follows five years of work by NOV Rig Technologies on this equipment and technology. The company also claimed that it is first oilfield equipment manufacturer to design, engineer and sell such a package.

NOV Rig Technologies president Joe Rovig said: “This is a historic moment for the offshore oil and gas industry.

“The introduction of NOV’s 20K BOP marks a new era in the exploration and development of high-pressure formations. We are proud of our role in enabling our industry to continually push beyond traditional limitations through technological innovation.”

He added that the initial deployment of the technology is slated in 2021 on a 20K well located in the Gulf of Mexico.
