Asia to spearhead global polypropylene capacity additions until 2030

Rapid urbanisation, expanding middle‑class consumption and ongoing industrialisation across key Asian markets are accelerating demand.

GlobalData Energy October 27 2025

Asia is poised to lead global polypropylene capacity additions until 2030, driven chiefly by rising demand from the automotive, packaging and construction sectors. Rapid urbanisation, expanding middle‑class consumption and ongoing industrialisation across key Asian markets are accelerating demand for polypropylene, prompting producers to add and expand capacity.

Asia is anticipated to add a polypropylene production capacity of 40.43 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) between 2025 and 2030 from 57 planned and 22 announced projects. China and India are central to the capacity additions in the region, with 21.87 mtpa and 13.50 mtpa respectively.

The highest capacity addition in the region is expected from a major project in India, Reliance Industries Jamnagar polypropylene plant 3, with a capacity of 5.20 mtpa. The project is located in the state of Gujarat and is expected to commence operations in 2030. Reliance O2C Ltd is the designated operator and Reliance Industries Ltd holds the 100% equity stake.

China's Fujian Yongrong New Materials Company Putian polypropylene plant 2 in Fujian province is anticipated to add the highest capacity in the country during the outlook period with 1.10 mtpa. Fujian Eversun New Material Co Ltd is its operator, and it is expected to come online in 2029. The company is also planning plant 1 and plant 3, with polypropylene production capacities of of 0.90 mtpa and 0.3 mtpa, respectively. Plant 1 is likely to commence operations in 2026 and plant 3 in 2028.

The other major projects in the region are the PT Pertamina Rosneft processing and petrochemicals Tuban polypropylene plant in Indonesia, and Brunei Hengyi Industries Pulau Muara Besar polypropylene plant in Brunei, with capacities of 1.16 mtpa and 1.0 mtpa respectively. Both are expected to come onstream in 2029. Further details of global polypropylene capacity and capex analysis can be found in GlobalData’s new report, ‘Polypropylene Industry Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of Active and Planned Plants to 2030.
